I own several inexpensive hard cases, with pluck-n-pull foam. I liked these at first and loaded them up. Unfortunately, after only a few months the foam started to break apart and no longer protected my equipment. This led me to look for alternatives. Initially, I looked for better foam, but couldn't find anything that matched my needs. I even tried gluing several camping mats together and carefully cut out holes to match my equipment. Again, after only a few months the mats lost their rigidity and started to come apart.
I'm now using the Vanguard Divider Bag 53 as my primary storage. It's not a hard case and I wouldn't want to throw it in the trunk with other luggage, but it does a good job of storing my equipment. At some point, I may opt for the hard case, as well, but I can't think of a time when I would want to travel with this much equipment and something this big.
I've attached a picture that shows my basic layout. One nice thing about the dividers, when compared to the foam is that it's easy to re-arrange. With the foam, once you make the holes, your stuck with them. I've only had this divider bag for a short period, but believe and expect that it will last longer than the foam. Time will tell....
I was not able to store my 70-200 f2.8L or 100-400 4.5-5.6L, in this bag, due to their size. They were too tall to stand up and took too much room laying down.
The bag lid contains a pouch made of a mesh netting. I threw some gray cards and micro fiber cloths in this pouch. I wouldn't want to store anything hard in this pouch as there is nothing between it and the equipment below.
I could have made use of a few more dividers, but am satisfied with the ones that came with the bag. Also, it would have been nice, if the bag was a bit more rigid. I know it's a bag and not a case so I am not deducting any points as a result either of these items.
Assuming this bag holds up, which I expect it will, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again or recommend it to a friend.

The Vanguard Divider Bag 46 resembles a small suitcase from the outside. It sits flat on one large face with a zipper around the upper lid. It is padded on all sides and contains a number of dividers that can be adjusted using the velcro found at their ends to attach them to the bag's inner lining or to the surfaces of other dividers. There are three long dividers that can run from the front to the back of the case and about 16 smaller dividers of a couple of different sizes that can be used to form a number of small pockets for cables, chargers, batteries, lenses, or whatever. The lid of the case has a nylon mesh pouch with a zipper closure. If I ever need another bag like this, this is the one I'll buy!
