I waffled between the 8z and 8x. The tipping point was a review I read that was less that favorable of the tapered design of the 8x. I decided that if I was going to carry something this big on my back (and I'm on 5'6" tall), I wanted optimum space and easy of access.
I have carried this back walking and biking. I have worn it slung across my torso and hanging from one shoulder. At the moment I have in the main compartment a Canon 6D, Canon SL1, Canon 24-105mm, Sigma 70-200, Sigma 1.4 extender, Canon 50mm and a Tokina 11-16mm (that by the way vignettes at the low end when mounted on the 6D). There is still some room, albeit not enough for rigid sun shades necessitating the use of a collapsible one. The sling and waste band combination distribute the load well.
My only modest annoyance with this back is that there is only one open/close zipper configuration for the main compartment. It moves in the opposite the direction I instinctively reach for when opening and closing the the compartment. I am right-handed. I am getting use to it, but when reaching quickly for my camera I still get it wrong. I guess I need a "Camera Bag Opening for Dummies" book.

The Tamrac Velocity 8z bag is just what I wanted. It carries by gripped EOS 650 with a 70-200 zoom with room for 3-4 additional lenses, charger, and some small accessories. I used the bag extensively last weekend, both for sight-seeing in town and some hard hiking in the Swiss Alps--the bag is perfect for my needs. It is comfortable and it is easy to access your camera for that fast shot. I mostly carried it on my shoulder when I was taking a lot of photos, and then slung it on my back when I was "mobile." both configurations were fine--I wore the bag for many hours without any pain or rubbing/irritation. I highly recommend this bag. I have owned the Velocity 7 for many years and used it regularly as my 'walk-around street bag'. I recently purchase the Velocity 8z mainly to be able to add my iPad while on short overnight trips and fell in love with it for many additional reasons. The extra room now allows me to easily 70-200 f/2.8 lens attached to my Nikon D800 body, plus either my Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 or the 28-300mm lens, plus my flash and Gary Fong diffuser in the main compartment. In the front zippered pocket I carry several filters, cleaning cloth, memory cards, business cards, cell phone, keys, eye glasses (in a hard case), etc. In the other zippered pocket under the main flap I stash several other handy items.As with my earlier version the material is strong and durable and the bag well constructed.
This bag is not too big meets and surpasses my expectation. I would recommend it to friends

I wanted a sling camera bag of high quality, good protective properties (well padded), intelligent compartments for my gear, comfortable to wear, attractive looking, and very specifically a bag that would fit my Canon T3i with Canon 100-400 lens attached. My research led me to this bag and this particular size. It is attractive, sturdy, comfortable to wear, the center compartment is a perfect fit for my camera and large lens, and I have room to carry a speed light, and a couple of other lenses and the accessories that I want to carry. There is even a compartment for my iPad. The rating in part reflects the fact that I had somewhat high expectations for the bag. I was looking for a relatively small (compared to my backpacks) bag that could carry my 5DIII, a couple lenses, and my iPad. I already had a Tamrac Rally 6, but liked the idea of the MAS straps and the padded iPad slot so I decided to try the Velocity 8z.It works as advertised. I like the fact that it can carry an iPad, and for a couple lenses and my 5DIII it is fine. It is well made and rugged, and the zippers inspire confidence (haven't had this bag very long so I can't say anything to strong about the reliability of the zippers, but I've used another Tamrac bag almost daily for nearly three year now and the zippers still move as smoothly as when I got the bag).
It was not quite as comfortable as I expected for a sling bag,however. The strap is padded but awkward on me, and the bag sticks out more than I expected (or perhaps in an unfamiliar way--I'm used to the way the Rally 6 fits around me). The supposedly "super-speedy" draw and shoot times advertised either require lots more practice than I am willing to put in or some kind of secret training. This isn't really an issue for me, but if anyone is interested in this bag primarily for the advertised "speed-draw" characteristics, I strongly advise trying it out first.
This is probably a great bag for some folks--just not the right fit for me.
