I have been through a few camera packs over the last several years. This one is for the adventurer/hiking/traveling semi-pro/professional photographer. There are a few things not in the description (even on Lowepro's site). The center tripod part has a pouch that unzips out and hangs underneath, which means fast draw of the tripod because you dont need to use straps. 6 memory card slots; 2 in side pocket, 4 inside large compartment, and each has a flap to tell which are empty and which are full. There is also a waterproof sack (removable) inside the side pocket for the water bladder to fit into, for extra isolation if the bladder should leak.
The adjustable should straps/harness is key with a pack your going to load some weight into. Solid zippers and straps. raincoat. Solid padding. Good amount of pockets. Top part comes off for a day pack (although I'll personally probably never use that feature). Comfortable padding.
I was looking at the 400AW but was just a bit to big. Typically I carry in this one: Canon 50D with battery grip, Canon Xti with battery grip. Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6, Canon 28-135mm, Sigma 50 f/1.4, Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro, Canon flash, Manfrotto CF tripod and head, about a dozen filters, shutter releases, misc items. So you see, it's a good size.
You may think the price is a bit high, but it's well warranted. I have had Lowepro backpacking packs for years, same technology, just built for your camera equipment.

First, the main compartment has more lens inserts than I have lenses, so by removing a few of them I was able to create more room for other misc items. I was initially dissuaded from buying this pack because it just appeared to hold camera equipment and that was all, but since I now own it I can say that it has enough room for a full day excursion/or an overnighter in hinterland.Second, it holds the tripod very well in the sleeve on the front side and helps with load balance. The reservoir is definitely a plus, as are the straps on the underside of the pack which could hold a sleeping bag or tent/both maybe?
All in all it is very adjustable and places the load where it belongs, on your hips, not your shoulders and sits comfortably next to your back for a secure, stable fit.
I would recommend this to anyone serious about gear protection, load bearing comfort, durability, and well-looks, but hey, who are we trying to impress? Though I am partial to the light gray and black, as well as the rain cover being gray, which is more neutral and fade resistant.

I am a saxophonist who works in the cruise industry and my interest in photography has grown significantly during my time abroad. Like another reviewer said, I don't have quite enough lenses/bodies to completely fill this bag, but I bought it to aid the schlepping of my whole life around every six months or so when I come home. The capacity truly is great in addition to my laptop, one dSLR body, three lenses, a 430EXII, several filters, a rocket air blaster, etc I was also able to fit my two external hard drives, WD Live Hub, and other miscellaneous electronics in the main compartment. I then wore the bag while traveling all day through several airports and it is seriously comfortable when you take the time to adjust it to your body.The only problem I have with the bag (and my reason for the 4/5 star rating) is that the term "Airline Carryon Compatible" is slightly misleading. Yes, the bag will fit through the magnetometer scanners at the airport and is within carryon size guidelines, but when this thing is full of stuff you can expect to have some trouble on the actual airplane. I also carry a saxophone which I stow overhead and my aim was to put the bag at my feet under the seat in front of me (as is policy). If you have anything in the side pockets of the bag, it is not likely to fit under that seat. Even after I emptied them it was still pretty tricky to shove this bad boy in there. It took up most of my foot space for an 8 hour flight. Stowing it up top COULD be an option for some of you, but it has some pretty serious straps and it may be just as difficult to stow in an overhead. If that's your goal, make sure you'll be traveling on a larger plane (it had no chance on a lake jumper from Chicago to Detroit). You don't want to risk having to check it!
There is little I need to say about the quality of this bag that the other positive reviewers haven't already pointed out -Lowepro makes smart, durable products and this one can fit a TON of stuff and take a beating. The materials are top-notch and there is no worry that your equipment isn't protected to the fullest. Also, I imagine taking this on a long hike to your nature hide would be a really comfortable experience. Great pack. This pack is built with the serious photographer in mind. There is ample room for multiple camera bodies and lenses. The ability to keep a large lens on a camera is great. I got this pack because I had just bought the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 for my collection. Upon putting it in my old pack I realized I had out grown my old pack. This was one of the replacements I was looking at. I ran into another photographer in the field and got a chance to look at one, (I no longer have a shop to go to in town). I relized this pack would fit my needs for some time to come. The main compartment is deep enough to put pro cameras in, this includes pro-Sumer bodies with battery packs on them the like the D800E. The movable dividers are great for setting up the pack to fit your needs . Each outside pocket has a tripod sleave. There are 6 storage sleves for memory cards and plenty of srotage pockets. The right side pocket is where the water bladder will go if you chose to buy one ( would be nice if they would include one). I got one and it is a great additiion to the pack, I no longer have to figure out where to carry water. The top will come off to use as a hip pack though I doubt I will ever use this feature. But there is plenty of room in there for miss. stuff and even a hook to keep your car keys on. This pack is also built with good strong material and the water resistant zipper on the main compartment is a great addition. The rain fly for this pack is kept on the bottom in its own pocket and is great in rainy weather. It has an elastic band all the way around to keep it in place and two straps to tighten it up if need be.My recent trip I carried in this pack , Nikon D800E with battery pack, Nikon D200 With Battery pack, Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, Sigma 70-200mm f2.8, Nikor 18-135mm, 8 Filters, Chargers for both cameras, manfroto tripod, Water bladder, Cleaning supplies, 6 CF cards, Alienware laptop (although it was a tight fit in the sleeve). With all this I still had room for at least 3 more lens.
This pack will be with me for some time to come.
