Kata KT CS-17 CS Camera Satchel Review

Kata KT CS-17 CS Camera Satchel
Customer Ratings: 3.5 stars
Buy Now
This bag is one of the few that is designed for carrying a 17 inch laptop and a basic set of camera equipment in one bag. The product description states that "the Kata CS-17 Camera Satchel holds a D/SLR Camera with lens attached, up to 2 lenses (the largest being a 70-200mm 2.8 with reversed hood), accessories and up to a 17-Inch laptop computer."

Unfortunately, the bag suffers from some design issues. Beginning with the point of contact. The bag's ( Gecko ) shoulder pad has small suction grips that prevent it from slipping. These also make it uncomfortable. Even when the bag is only half full, the "Gecko" pad cuts into your shoulder. If you fill the bag completely as per their product description (as shown in the images) it becomes very uncomfortable to carry the bag around. That totally defeats the point of advertising it as a "Camera Satchel". If you're not comfortable carrying your bag around with your equipment in it , you're probably not going to carry it around a lot.

Kata also put plastic hooks on the side of the bag to which the shoulder strap attaches to. Metal hooks are more durable. Saving a few dollars but putting the customers equipment at possible risk is not a smart decision.

On the outside, the bag has 2 external pockets, one which is small and can only be used for storing a set of keys ( it has a key chain clip ) and a packet of gum which may have been their design decision but is limiting for daily use. However, the second pocket is large enough to be useful and a pair of earphones, a cellphone, battery chargers and various cables (ipod, USB, firewire etc etc) can easily fit in there.

Some positive design aspects of the bag are

Inside, there is a dedicated laptop slot with adequate padding, A 17 inch notebook should fit in there and will be well protected. A 15 inch or 13 inch will fit easily with room to spare. On the right side of the laptop slot, there are 2 pen holders and a mobile phone slot.

There's a large middle pocket. This is where you store the camera insert. The camera insert is a large rectangular pouch. A camera with a 70-200mm lens attached, another lens, battery charger + flash will fit in the camera insert. Even with the camera insert inside, there's space for a 2.5 inch portable hard drive or a book in the middle pocket.

There's a third flat pocket for smaller items like notepads, MP3 players etc. At the back there's a document pocket which is useful for storing magazines and files. An expansion zipper runs across the bottom and sides of the bag. This is used to expand the width of the bag to allow it to hold extra gear. In real world use, it helps but not that much.

The bag seals up completely. Some other messenger bags have flaps which are open from the sides, so rain water can leak in and damage your equipment. The Kata CS-17 isn't like that. It has a 2 zipper system which will prevent water from leaking into the bag if you're ever caught in a downpour. Internally it is made out of Yelloop the bright yellow soft fabric that all Kata bags are made out of. The bright yellow fabric allows you to locate items more easily in dim lighting.

It has a comfortable and sturdy carrying handle. A lot of messenger bags are designed without handles. This can be inconvenient as you're forced to use the shoulder strap all the time. Kata smartly allows you to carry the bag as you see fit in briefcase mode or messenger mode. Near the handle, there's a quick access zipper opening on top which is convenient and allows you to insert and remove items out of the bag without having to open it up completely every time.

Included with the bag is Kata's double sided all weather protection cover which can be used to protect the bag in the event of rainfall or snow or used as a makeshift reflector.

This bag was designed to meet the needs of those who need a sling bag in which they can carry a large laptop and their basic camera kit. Unfortunately, due to a few design decisions, Kata has made a 4 / 5 star product into an average 3 star product. I'd recommend ordering it and seeing if it works for you, if it does, well and good. If not then return it.

Hope this helps!

This bag replaced a bag that came with my laptop. I bought this so I can take my camera with me on my business trips.

I can put a large 17" laptop, Nikon D80 w the 18-200mm lens and a flash. The only thing missing is a dedicated space for the laptop/business stuff like power pack, mouse, phone charger pad.

Well, I bought this because it looked compact and safe. In general, I think it's just right. I use it with my P50, and there isn't much room left for any other thing.

There is a inner mesh pocket where you can definitely fit an extra SD card (maybe two) as long as you don't use its plastic case, otherwise, you will have to push your camera a little bit in order to fit. Also, there's a front pocket where I place two extra batteries but everything gets pretty tight, so that's all I can carry... If you need to carry cables, forget it!.

For me, I think it would had been better if the case were just a little bit bigger, by adding 1 or 1/2 cm to each side would help a lot, and things would be less squashed... if you want a tiny-as-posible case this could be your choice!

Also notice, there isn't clips (or holes) for shoulderstrap, so you'll need to wear a belt all the time unless you want to take it in your hands or a bag... I'm planinng to make some holes in order to add one (it's better this way when your wearing bathing suits)...

I find this to be a perfect holder for the Nikon P-60... it is padded enough to protect the camera from moderate drops, large enough to hold 4 extra AA cells & an extra SD or SDHC card (in plastic protector) but is still not overly bulky. Nice!

The Nikon Coolpix P60 camera I purchased this case for fits in the case perfectly, and I like the Velcro strap for attaching the camera to a belt when not in use. However, I wish the case was a little larger, or at least had a storage compartment for extra batteries.

Honest reviews on P-series Fabric Case Black

I bought this case for my Nikon P5100. It fits perfectly, but not enough room for the Nikon strap [I will live with that]. Enough padding to protect my Nikon, but not overly bulky. I am very please with this case.

Not fancy but fits perfectly. Nicely padded but not bulky. There is a compartment in the back for an extra memory card and another in the front for a couple of AA batteries or a USB SD Card Reader.

Discount Kroo Camera Case for Fujifilm Finepix + Bundled with Universal LCD

Kroo Camera Case for Fujifilm Finepix + Bundled with Universal LCD Screen Protector Kit + Cloth
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

The Fujifilm Finepix F40fd 8.3MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Silver) fits into the case but it is not practical. The strap (inside) to secure the camera just fits and its a pain to secure the camera. The easiest way to use the case is to leave it loose inside but with the double zipper system, it falls out too easily when the case is opened. Therefore, it is not practical like a conventional camera case that opens from the top. Furthermore, the belt clip is secured with a metal rivet that can be easily exposed on the inside of the case. It is covered by a bit of material but in my case, it wasn't attached properly with glue and hence it flaps loose. It came off within the first day. The exposed metal will scratch the camera and the screen.

I award this case 2 stars because faults apart, it is a good protective cover. Personally, I regret the purchase.

These case is perfect with the Fujiflim Finepix Z10fd camara. It has a velcro strap that keeps the camara in place and a net for batteries or whatever you want for your camara. Great buy!

Best Deals for Kroo Camera Case for Fujifilm Finepix + Bundled with Universal LCD

This camera case is not the right size for the Fuji Finepix F31fd camera. If your idea, as was mine, is size that's why you got this camera in the first place then this case is the wrong buy. It's just too large. Go to Circuit City and look at similar cases half the size, which fit snug, no movement for the camera.

Honest reviews on Kroo Camera Case for Fujifilm Finepix + Bundled with Universal LCD

I bought this for my Fujifilm Finepix z5fd camera. The case fits the camera okay but not very securely. One side inside the case has a mesh barrier and the other a single horizontal velcro strap. The velcro strap side doesn't hold the camera very secure and the mesh barrier side is also a bit loose. When you pull the camera out using the barrier side it scrapes against the zipper.

Whatever you do, don't use the caribiner clip to secure the camera on the outside of anything! I treat all my electronics very gently and the first week of using this case the rivet holding the clip onto the case fell off. Luckily someone was walking right behind me when it happened so alerted me my camera was now on the ground. The good news about the case is it protected the camera from the fall and my camera wasn't damaged in the least.

In my opinion it's a cheap case that's decent for putting in a backpack, luggage, or purse for transport but for frequent use (scraping the camera against the zipper when pulling out) or more options of carry methods I'd keep looking.

Oh, another decent thing with the case I have to admit is space to carry the usb cable inside the case opposite the side you have the camera on.

I got this case for my Z20 camera. It is a little too big for my camera, and doesn't hold it well. Also, this case is HIDEOUS-I was really disappointed when I saw it. The same night, my friends came over to visit and saw this case lying on the table. They too exclaimed over how unattractive it was, so it isn't just me being picky.

I have used the hard shell Lowel cases in the past and they are very heavy and sometimes unwieldy. If you are traveling a lot or shipping the cases, you need that rugged structure. If you are like me though and generally shoot smaller gigs closer to home, this compact and lightweight case is perfect. I have three 1K lights in this little bag and have enough room left over to squeeze in some gels, spare bulbs and a smaller RIFA soft light! This was a good way to organize a small light kit without spending a ton of money. Lets face it, if we have hundreds of dollars to burn, I think we would all like to buy more production gear, not an overpriced case.

Pro:

Perfect fit

Nice and soft padding won't scratch LCD and camera body

Waterproof

Have enough space to put additional memory card and battery (if needed)

Compact

Good price

Con:

Belt Loop is closed It's better if the belt loop can be opened.

Best Deals for Lowepro Ridge 10 Camera Case (SAGE GREEN)

I bought this case for the Nikon Coolpix L14 that I gave my seven year old granddaughter for Christmas. It's absolutely perfect both for the camera and for her. It's large enough to hold the camera, extra batteries, and an extra memory card. It has both an adjustable neck strap and a belt loop. The padding is plenty adequate to protect the camera.

I chose this particular case because I own two other Lowepro bags, one for my Canon 30D and at least three lenses (depending on the size) and one smaller for my video camera. The quality is excellent and the bags sufficiently protect my gear.

I must add that I find it amusing that some people blame the bag when their camera doesn't fit and then give the bag a one star rating! Get a measuring device and a clue!

This is the perfect case for the photographer who has a point-and-shoot camera with professional features. These cameras, e.g. Olympus XZ-1, tend to be slightly larger that most "amateur" models. A XZ-1 fits very nicely in this case. The low profile side pocket has enough room to hold extra batteries and Secure Digital cards. The top flap can be closed by Velcro for quick access to camera or by clip lock for more secure transport. The belt loop is semi-rigid which makes attaching this case to one's belt much easier than flimsy ones. A good investment for around $10, this thinly padded case will provide decent protection for higher end point-and-shoot cameras.

I received a new digital camera for the holidays and needed to protect it while having the room for extra batteries and media cards.

The Targus Medium Camera case fit the bill with options to carry or wear on my belt and room for all my extras as well as quick release of the cover so that I do not do a lot of fumbeling if I need the camera in a hurry. The padding and softness of the case is an extra bonus and it suits me to a t!!ONCE AGAIN AMAZON HAD WHAT I NEEDED!

Review of Lowepro Lens Case 4S

I have been trying to find a way to easily carry a lot of camera equipment for quite some time. I have tried backpacks, shoulder bags, duffel bags, but none of them really worked all that well. Then I saw the Lowepro Street and Field system with completely customizable pouches, vests, belts, and accessories. It works great, you only get the pouches you need so there is no waisted space and you can organize them however you want according to how often they are used (put frequently used items in easier to access places.)

The variety alone of this system is worth the investment, but the quality and ease of use is also very high which is a big plus. You can get a case for any lens, camera body, or accessory you have. I even have cases for my cell phone and water bottle. One word of caution, be sure to measure your lens with the lens hood on backwards if you use them to make sure that the entire thing will fit into the pouch, because sometimes the lens will fit, but then the lens with the lens hood will not. I often carry 5-6 lenses, extension tubes, teleconverters, extra memory cards and batteries, and a bunch of cleaning supplies and other gadgets, which weights a ton. But when they are evenly distributed on this vest/belt Lowepro system it is actually very manageable.

The only down side is that everyone will be staring at you because you have thousands of dollars of camera equipment strapped to your body. But if you can overlook that, this is the way to go. I have used this system at many zoos without ever having problems, in fact just unzipping a single lens and switching seems safer to me than opening an entire bag of equipment every time you want to switch lenses. Many of the cases also come with a built in rain/snow cover so if the weather changes all of your equipment is not destroyed. You can also put just a few pouches on a normal belt when you are just going to take photos in the back yard or don't need to take all of your equipment, which is nice. I really can't say enough about how much easier this makes traveling with a lot of equipment, if you have been hopelessly searching for a better solution, consider this, you won't regret it.

I bought Rokinon 500mm mirror telephoto lens. It's 4.5" in diameter, too wide for a lot of lens cases. The lens, with the T-Mount attached fits fine. And the lid pouch had a place for filters in the cases. Yeah it's big, but unlike other Lowpro pouches I have, this one comes with a shoulder stap too. A lot better than the bulky lens rolling around.

Best Deals for Lowepro Lens Case 4S

When I carry my ultra wide angle lens, I need a case to accommodate the lens with the hood. The hood is quite wide, and this case fits the whole thing perfectly. It has a long strap, so you can carry it on your shoulder comfortably. It also comes with built-in waist belt straps. The design of this case is very well thought off and it offers good protection for your lens. I highly recommend it.

Honest reviews on Lowepro Lens Case 4S

I got this case for my 16-35 f2.8 LII USM lens ... i fits really nice in it ... with place for the hood too.

if you go with the smaller bag for the same lens ... it wont fit.

for the bag it self, the quality of the construction is really good. i am not sure if it is weather sealed or not ... but will it defiantly stop the normal drops of water.

size was an issue ... cuz i thought it will be relatively small ... but for me it is really big ...

apart from the size ... i would have given it 5 stars ...

this stores a d7000 with 18-200, tokina 100, 50 prime and sb700. also stores cables, spare batteries, cards, cloths, batteries, chargers... a few documents and a tablet. good base construction to try protect from puddles, and rain cover for those not great weather days. a cool feature is the top zip to be able to quickly pull out the camera. they have this interesting magnet tab to protect the zip from getting accidentally pulled and keeping the top exposed. cool. also can be put on the handle of a suitcase.

this is the perfect travel bag for my gear... and I have been looking for a bag like this for a LONG time.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I have been looking for a mid range "carry-all" for some time now, and I just happened to see this at a local store. I'd never heard of Vanguard before, but the quality was really nice and it was the perfect size for what I wanted to have portable on foot:

body w/lens

extra lens

2 speedlites

a few filters

extra batteries

random stuff

The velcro dividers & pads are well made, unlike many other brands on the market which feel flimsy. The bag also feels very sturdy and well padded, and the rubber feet are sturdy as well to keep your bag in an upright position even when fully packed.

I also went with this bag over other styles because:

-it isn't as awkward as a sling style bag, and you can wear it over either shoulder with more comfort

-the camera is much more accessible than a backpack

-is more maneuverable than a rolling attache-style bag

-holds more than a waist bag (such as Lowepro's outback)

True, it gets a bit uncomfortable fully loaded with a tripod to boot, but that's the beauty of just offloading what you don't need. But for me, this is the perfect size for a very well-rounded shooting experience without feeling limited as to what I can bring with me.

-------UPDATE 3/2013---------

Still going strong, no issues whatsoever with this bag. It's awesome as a walkaround bag if you need to carry more than one lens or a speedlite or two. Very comfortable if you don't stuff it completely full. All the stitching, velcro, snaps... all holding up perfectly.

One great feature I didn't mention in the original review is that even though this messenger has a traditional folding flap, there is also a hidden zipper up top so you can do a quick unzip & retrieve the camera quickly if needed.

Best Deals for Vanguard Up-rise 38 Zoom Expandable Camera Bag - Black

I have been looking for the proverbial perfect camera bag for decades, ever since I got two additional lenses (Kiron 28-105 and Kiron 70-200 zooms) for my Nikon FM2 (in mid `80s).

Having bought a couple camera bags in various styles and sizes, I realized that there was no such thing as the perfect camera bag. Make it even worse, I was addicted to collecting camera for several years and tried by bring multiple cameras/lenses to the field every time I go out. Then, my aging process seemed to accelerate in the past few years, my body and spine started to protest to the hefty weight on my shoulder and back. Hence, I was looking for the perfect camera bag again. This time, I tried to be realistic to myself.

From my perspective, the camera bag has 2 basic designs (these are my terminologies): 1) horizontal design the depth of the bag is about 6 to 8 inches such that all lenses can be seen and fetched from the top easily. The main drawbacks are that you need to put a (D)SLR body with a medium or large lens attached horizontally. Hence, this combo will take much of the useful space. The 2nd type is "Vertical." You can put a body with a medium or large lens attached and put the combo vertically in the bag. It is very convenient to take the rig and shoot. The drawback is that some smaller lenses will be stacked vertically within the depth of the bag. Therefore, nothing is perfect. It all depends upon what you need.

I was looking for a vertical bag that can accommodate 2 medium-sized (D)SLR bodies and each has a lens attached, plus maybe 2 additional lenses and a flash. Having read every possible review on medium to large shoulder bag in the Internet, I picked this not-so-well-known Vanguard Up-Rise 38 expandable shoulder bag.

First, I tested its maximum capacity (without a laptop, since I will not lug a laptop to the field) without the expansion. I can easily put the following combos into the bag: (1) Nikon F100 (film) attached with a Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm VR, (2) Nikon D7000 attached with Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8D AF ED, and (3) Nikon SB-600 flash. I still have some space to spare. See the attached pictures that I uploaded. They fit very well vertically in the bag albeit, the Nikon F100 body is pushing to the limits of the bag. I only wish the front latch can be a little bit longer.

The upper portion of some removable dividers has additional flap on the top; it is very handy to cushion, say, 2 (D) SLR bodies.

It is comfortable to carry 2 bodies and 4 lenses (still heavy) and to walk around for several hours. I wish it has an external holder to accommodate a water bottle. Overall, it is an excellent shoulder camera bag.

Honest reviews on Vanguard Up-rise 38 Zoom Expandable Camera Bag - Black

I bought this bag about a year ago because I travel alot for work. I usually bring my camera with me along with a work laptop. This bag is the perfect solution! I have packed my Nikon D90, kit 18-105, 50mm 1.4, Tokina 11-16, and SB 600 along with a Dell 15 inch computer on several trips. It is also big enough to carry my Nikon 70-200 VRII attached. It looks very professional especially when traveling and wearing a suit and tie. It doesnt attract alot of attention or scream, "Ive got $3000 worth of camera equipment in here along with a laptop".

The bag is very well made with several neat features like the top zipper that allows you to access your camera without exposing everything in your bag to the world. This was my first vanguard product and I am going to purchase the sling bag Vanguard Up-rise 43 Zoom Expandable Sling Camera Bag (Black) very soon. I started doing some concert photography and it looks perfect for that environment. If you are looking for a messenger style bag for your camera, your search is over.

We just got through taking this camera bag for a week trip to California, so we really put it through its paces. The bag is lightweight and has many pockets to put accessories in. One of the things I like best about the bag is that is has a zipper opening across the top, so you can get your camera through this slot instead of having to open the flap. GREAT IDEA! I investigated a lot of bags, but this topped the list with style, size, weight and features. We love it.

This is a great bag of very high quality. I bought this bag, so it could fit my gripped 50D with my 70-200 f/4 fitted.

Also, I wanted a bag that would hold misc. items beside the camera. One specific thing was a book. The front pocket fits a book of any size, which is perfect since I read a lot when travelling.

The main compartment holds my gripped 50D and any of my lenses fitted. Besides my 50D, I own a sigma 10-20, 50mm F1.8 and the canon 17-55mm f/2.8. I plan to get a 60mm macro as well, this will still fit inside the bag, although it is getting heavy. Main compartment is divided in three: One in the middle for the camera and lens fitted, and two others of equal size in the sides. The center compartment also holds my 430 flash with diffuser (standing up beside the mounted lens).

Inside the main compartment are pockets for memory cards, batteries, remote, pens, pads, etc. There's also a larger, more shallow pocket, for other items. The main compartment can be configured for most use, although the rectangular dimensions of the bag, makes other configurations than the default, less attractive.

Outside are long pockets on the side. I use this for my strap, as I don't use it everyday. Beware, that the contents of the external side pockets, will take up space in the main compartment. Putting my strap in the left side pocket, makes it a tight fit for my 70-200 f/4 on the inside (with hood attached reverse). Besides taking up space on the inside, they are very deep and tight. I have small hands, but do find it difficult to reach a penny in one of those pockets.

The strap on the bag itself is really solid and of high quality! The pad is soft and has rubber strips to keep it from sliding off your shoulder. Of the same material, are straps just above the side pockets, for other items compatible with Tamracs SAS or MAS, or other items like lens pockets, bottle pockets, filter pouches etc. These straps does make access to the side pockets a little more difficult.

Beside the main strap, there's a small "handle" as well. This is great for putting it in the car, moving it a short distance, etc. Don't know why I've never seen it on a camera bag before, but it's really practical in day-to-day use.

I simply love this bag, and it comes with me even though I choose not to bring all of my stuff. It's not a big bag as such, but it's roomy. I rarely walk around an entire day, but if I were going to, I would select only some of my equipment or go with a backpack.

Pros

Great quality

Lots of room

Doesn't feel or look big (I'm a small person, and any crumpler bag that can carry this amount of equipment, would look huge on me).

Fantastic strap!

Comes with raincover

Great "handle" under the strap

Has silencers for the top flap (so you can open the bag, without the entire wedding party suddenly looking your way)

Cons

Dividers aren't velcro combatible on the sides, so you can only attach dividers to the inside of the bag.

Side pockets take up space on the inside, and are very deep.

This is a great case for the Nikon CoolPix P310 or any other similarly sized compact point and shoot camera. The case is light weight, water resistant (sheds light rain), has thicker than normal padding for a point and shoot case, and has what appears to be a micro fiber interior lining. The camera is a snug fit (no chance of it accidentally falling out of the case if you leave the top flap unzipped) but is easy to slip in and out of the case. The belt clip does not inadvertently come off your belt. It has a memory card pocket in the inside of the flap, and a full length pocket in the back of the case. The rear pocket would hold memory cards or business cards, but will not hold anything of any thickness. In my experience, this is one of the best designed point and shoot camera cases that I have owned.

This review is for the Incase CL58055 Point and Shoot Pouch.

This bag is hands down the bag to get. If you're looking for a point and shoot case, look no further. This little bag is everything you need. The quality is great, the thickness of the pouch lets you know that your camera will be secure if you drop it, hit it, or even wet the case, and the design is ideal. The pouch easily holds my iPhone and Canon s100 without smashing them together. A mesh pocket is inside for memory cards. A belt/strap clip is on the backside for use when you're not using the bag strap. Honestly, Incase couldn't have made this product any better. I take it everywhere.

I highly recommend this bag. You won't regret it. The price is a little high, but worth every penny.

Very nice case for my camera. Soft to the touch on the outside and inside where it matters. doesn`t have that plastic feel on the outside and has storage inside for battery or memory card. convienient belt clip too. worth the price to me.

Purchased a Point and Shoot Pouch from the Incase Camera Collection to hold my Canon S100 and some peripherals. It's perfect. Very high quality, classy looks (doesn't look like a football when packed), versatile and just the right size. The other FOUR cases/pouches I bought were all missing the mark in one way or another. Very happy!

Nice sleeve -fits camera perfectly! Wish the sleeve came in different colors which would make it easier to locate my camera in my handbag. (Camera is small and easy to overlook and a brightly colored sleeve would make it stand out.)

Wife really liked the case. She will use it with her new Leica camera and carry it when she visits Germany.

This is a great looking and high quality leather case for the Leica V-LUX 20 camera; if this is what you are looking for, and are willing to pay a very high price point, get it be aware this case costs about 25% of the actual camera.

On the other hand there is no room for a spare SDHC card, batter or small lens cleaning cloth, is not weatherproof for $169 IMO it is definitely not worth the freight if you are planning travel or long days' shooting with your camera . I'd rather recommend a quality Lowepro or similar case that is cheaper, more weathertight, has better padding and offers sufficient storage for a battery or two, a spare photo card and a cleaning cloth or chamois.
