I reviewed the bag formally for Shutter Photo Magazine (Full review: ). In short...I love the bag. It is one of two bags that I regularly use depending upon the circumstance. For a typical day-to-day use, I still prefer the Kata DR-466i Digital Rucksack (Red), if only for it's internal organization for daily use. But when I need a larger bag to carry more stuff and to easily access any and all of my equipment quickly, the Bug-205 PL is my baby.

Size The bag is designed for use by those with more advanced setups. You will easily be able to fit a camera body (pro or consumer) into the bag with a large zoom lens mounted. I use mine with a 200mm zoom with its glare shield mounted and I even have a pocket stored at the end with two additional lenses. One could easily mount a 300mm lens (or longer) without any problems. Those with smaller setups should move on this bag is probably too large for you.

Durability let's face it, Kata is known for making durable bags. This is a lighter weight construction than they're older bags, but that was not at a cost to durability. I have been using the bag for 6 months now without any visible signs of wear. And I am tough on bags. This has followed me into ruins and through the woods.

Comfort Don't let the size scare you. It is narrower (front to back) than many bags with comparable storage, so it doesn't get in the way of your moving around. The straps are perhaps the most comfortable straps I've used. At first, the straps will appear hard. But as you use it, they soften up and really fit to your frame. Give it time they work out well. Getting to my stuff while the bag is on my shoulder isn't the easiest in the world especially when the larger lenses are mounted but it's doable. The camera pocket (the narrower zipper on the back) is easy to access without the risk of dumping out any of your other gear.

Interior Customization The only potential deal breaker of this bag is customization. Yes, you have dividers than can be reorganized to fit your needs. Yes, you have some velcro drawstring pouches that can be placed wherever you want them. But there is only so much you can do. The interior is set up with the camera (with mounted lens) in the center, and the other gear gets arranged in an upside-down "U" shape around it. Though the "U" pad that rests between the camera and gear chambers is removable, there's really nothing you can do with it. The other dividers can be arranged in limited number of places because of their size. The u-chamber is wider at the top of the bag than on the sides, and so the divider doesn't quite reach between the u-pad and the sidewall up there. But I didn't find this to be a problem. Most of my gear fits in where I need it without any problems.

Other things to note:

The laptop pocket can be somewhat hard to access. Over time, this has gotten easier, but still not ideal.

Built into the large flap are two longer pockets. This is a great place to store other items such as eyeglasses and the like. These also fold-back pretty easily with a half-unzip so you can get to your gear without fully opening the bag.

The bag is first and foremost a camera bag, and so it does not have any internal organizers such as narrow pockets for pens or cables. That's not to say there are not plenty of places to stick that stuff. But this isn't my day bag for those days I have to go to my regular job.

The tripod sling is one of the best I've seen, second only to the Crumpler The Customary Barge Deluxe (Olive/Orange(07A)). It even comfortably carries my beast of a tripod.

I bought this backpack about a month ago for a trip, in order to be able to carry my DSLR and laptop in the same place.

Overall, the design is nice, the internal layout is nice as well, with the removable dividers making it easy to rearrange stuff as you see fit. The protection and cushion for the laptop and the camera gear is very good, but as title of my review says, I feel Kata messed up badly with the straps. It's so bad I will be selling it.

The bad things about the backpack?

1. The straps are not meshed or soft at all. Apparently they're EVA, but all EVA, no covers. I took the backpack on a trip, basically carrying the full backpack with me for a whole day of airport traveling (from 4 pm to 3 AM), and the feeling on my shoulders after taking it off its horrible. I'm not weak by any means, and it's not the weight that was the problem, it's the way the straps pull your skin because of the plastic.

2. The straps don't start from the top as most backpacks do, but from lower, and that makes it a bit uncomfortable.

3. As some reviews I had read said, the laptop is not easy to take out. Not impossible, but certainly not easy.

Again, the construction and internal layout are great, but if you're planning to carry the laptop for a whole day (say hiking, or a long walk), it's something I believe you'd end up regretting.

Hopefully Kata will improve the design.

I think this is a great bag.It was surprisingly light weight. I didn't think that would be an issue but I really enjoy that. The compartments hold a lot of gear. The bag is a little big for what I have now but it allows me to expand. It is a great example of using space well. Cables go in the bag and add to the protection of gear. The bag is rugged and the compartments are easy to get to for pulling out a quick shot. The side compartments are tight but they work. Currently holding Canon 60D, 50mm lens, 17-35mm lens, tripod plate, cables, ipad or laptop (fits both but I never carry both), hard drive and light with room to spare. Getting an extend grip battery soon that should fit right in there.

This is the first kata I have. I'm a Vanguard lover, but the last one I got didn't cover my needs. I wanted a medium bag for those occasions when I don't want to carry my Skyborn 53 which is huge (and perfect when I take all my gear) or my Lowepro Classified 160 (I use it when I'm just taking my camera and an extra lens or flash), so I went for this one. I love the feeling of the nylon, it feels strong yet very light. I also like the yellow inside, it makes it very easy to find little stuff.

Another plus is the fact that it comes with little bags that attach to the inside with Velcro. Great to keep lens caps, batteries or other stuff.

There are 2 things I didn't like, the waist strap which is that, just a strap, no cushion and makes it look cheap (and could be very uncomfortable when using it wearing just a t-shirt). I mean, this is such a good looking bag with great finishes and seems like they were out of budget when somebody remember to add a waist strap.

The other thing is the rain/sun cover which comes as a separate item instead of tucked in like the Vanguard and Lowepro. If you're shooting outside and suddenly it starts to rain, you have to open the bag exposing your gear directly to the elements to extract the cover and use it. I know that you could keep the cover in your jacket or cargo pants, but as a photographer you need all that space for other things, don't you? Plus, if you keep it separately from you bag, sooner or later you will forget to bring it with you and, according to Murphy, it will happen exactly the day you'll need it.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Yes I would, but I'd also tell him/her to look other options before making a decision..

Based on the description, I ordered the bag to replace an old, large bag that held almost everything I would ever need on a trip an old fashioned type that hangs on your shoulder or with a strap across the body. When it arrived, I tried to load it with my equipment for a photo trip when I want to take whatever equipment I might need, or for storage at home. After looking at all the KATA bags and its website, I decided this would be a good choice. It's not, for that purpose.

First, let me say that the quality seems very good. The zippers work well, and the big rings on them are very handy. The interior has the usual velcro dividers that you can move around. For most people's use, the bag is probably adequate, although the carry system isn't designed for carrying all day with a full load the larger bags seem to have better belts to keep the weight off your shoulders this has just a nylon strap, although allegedly a padded belt is an option as part of a $75 kit, but it's unclear how well that attaches.

But, if you carry a Pro DSLR and full complement of AF, VR zooms, it gets pretty tight. By the time I add my Nikon 14-24 and 70-200, a 24-70 on a D800 with a battery grip, and a good sized zoom, I was about out of space. I could squeeze in a 1.7 extender and 55 manual focus macro, and that was about it. There were plenty of pockets for a wired GPS, and cable release, and a few minor parts no room at all for a backup body, as the description says, and I could add a 4th lens only because the 55mm is very small. I had hoped to be able to pack a small windbreaker, gloves, hand warmers, filters, a power bar or two, in a pocket somewhere and it just gets too tight unless I cram them in the laptop pocket, which is much too big for an iPad or small computer, but too narrow for much else. There is no room for a 105mm micro VR I'd like to buy.

Part of the problem is the way the bag is contoured it is more elliptical than it should be, which cuts out a lot of space, and is tapered at the top to the same effect. As a result, a lens that could be stood up at the bottom, like the 14-24, has to be laid down. The depth measurement from the manufacturer is deceiving because it only reaches maximum at the bottom center where the body would go, and a large pro body pretty much has to go there for the prism to fit [with an L or tripod bracket on the bottom it's pretty snug as it is. Basically, it seems to value form over function looks great, but not efficient.

There is also a problem with the shoulder straps that run from top to bottom. You should be able to disconnect, but the straps will not slip through the little clips that allow them to be tightened. There is no way to undo the straps so they can be tucked into the pouches in the back because they are doubled over and the doubled up part won't slip through to disconnect. I suppose you could cut the ends off and melt the nylon to prevent unravelling, but you shouldn't have to do that bad plan on the part of someone.

I have a large Tamrac Velocity sling bag that holds the body, three lens, plus the 1.7 and enough room for the iPad, filters, and is much more comfortable to carry. Not quite as big, but a better use of space.

This thing sucks. The velcro doesn't hold at all. It is just a large ONE section case. Replace the velcro, and it would be 4+ stars. Probably would have been happier if it was around $40-50, as it is just basically a large suitcase with no compartments. Still holds my gear, but definitely not worth the money.

Cheap plastic wheels only a matter of time before they break off. And that will SUCK

the handle needs to be longer to make it more comfortable when rolling it

overall it's just cheap feeling. I will definitely put more money into my next bag when this thing completely falls apart.

First the negative things about this bag. The bag is not as pictured. It is not a long slim bag which I thought was to be an innovative design. This is a simple camera bag design you could buy for $30.00 or more.

CAMERA & ONE LENS DESIGN:

The inside of the bag is 8.5 inches wide. A bit shy in width, but doable for my Pentax Kx to rest vertically. and my Tamron 18-200mm lens to fit tightly next to each other. There are two side pockets to hold accessories.

The pocket on the right (as you look at the bag) I use to hold two additional battery sets and is zippered. The "pocket" on the left side is made like a lens pouch, but too small to carry a lens. I use this pouch for the rear cap of the Pentax lens and the empty case for the 4 batteries in the camera. The front pouch is zippered and I use it for the instruction book and some miscellaneous papers I keep with me. The inside front of this pouch has two mesh type compartments which I use; one for for my DigitalGrayKard (used for spot on white balance and also a Gray card) and the other side of this mesh compartment is used for extra memory cards.

Over all I like the bag's compactness, as a retired pro-photographer, small is better for me.

My K-x fits pretty well, and one telephoto lens or two small lenses fits as well. The inserts are adjustable so camera fits tight enough not to move while carrying. Bag is small and light enough to carry out almost everywhere.

This product is great.

I got a Canon camera for my birthday and it came with a very large case. After a while I came to the realization that if I was to travel with my camera, a smaller case would be needed. I am going to be traveling to Brazil next year. In foreign places, a big case, clearly marked with an expensive camera's name is a big beacon screaming "STEAL ME, STEAL ME!" If I wanted to take a picture, I would have a hard time focusing on my pictures and the bag that still would contain another expensive lens or something else. This small bag, with no mark on it to say it contains an expensive camera is perfect for my travels. The strap is very long and there is also a helpful handle on the top of the bag to help with transportation and more security. I love the bag!!!!

The only drawback that this bag has is the very limited amount of space it has for other small necessities. Two camera cords barely fit into the little accessory pocket, so if you want ALL of your stuff with you, the bag is probably not for you.

Overall, the bag is great. My camera and its lens fit in perfectly. Also, I have one tip; don't try to fit in a lens that is not mentioned in this product's description. The company told the lens that would fit, and they fit perfectly, but if a bigger lens was tried it wouldn't work at all.

This bag also got here about two days after it was shipped. I do live just a few states over from where it was shipped, but it said I could expect it from the 21st-26th and it arrived on the 20th.

I was very disappointed that Tamrac Evolution Messenger bags have several design flaws that make them unsuitable for carrying cameras. The deal breaker for me is the top flap does not cover the entire width of the bag. In fact, both sides make a sort of funnel that welcomes moisture, dust and debris into the bag. The flap secures with both noisy Velcro and a clip. I'd prefer just the clip. The laptop/iPad pocket walls should be more rigid. The lift out camera caddy seems like a design compromise because it makes the bag too deep, so it doesn't hug your body very well. Finally, the bag is top heavy with a camera loaded as per instructions. It flops on its side when you sit it down. Some rigidity to the bottom would be welcome.

I returned the bag for a refund.

but it is just a little roomier then I would like. But if it is too snug, I would have to struggle to get the camera out when on my belt loop. The zipper runs across the top and down one side, creating a large opening for easy extraction and insertion of my camera. It has a nice zipper front pocket to hold an extra battery and memory card. It also comes with a small carabineer which makes hooking up to my belt loop very easy, or I could slip my belt through the nice 2 1/2" wide and sturdy belt loop sewed into the back of the case.

I would recommend this case to protect and to keep your camera with you at all times.

This is a very good case for the Scansnap S1100. I was a little concerned about the fairly high price until the item arrived and I could get a first-hand look. This is much more than simply a carrying case. There is an opening for the USB cable connection and a Velcro "flip up" closure allows you to use the scanner without removing it from the case. Right now it's sitting on the back corner of my desk plugged in to the computer. To scan something, I simply slide it in front of me, flip open the Velcro and scan away. The case keeps dust out of the scanner and when it's time to travel ... I goes right into the notebook case.

I was looking for a way to protect my ScanSnap 1100 so that I could carry it with me in my bag. Read the reviews of this case which said it was good, despite looking at the picture and thinking that it didn't look like what I wanted. When the case arrived, however, it is not anything like the picture. The scanner fits perfectly inside of it and you can use the scanner without removing it from the case. Very sturdy and well designed. Paid a little more than I want to, but it was worth it.

This case fits the Scansnap S1100 scanner perfectly, and it's designed such that the scanner doesn't need to be removed in order to use it. There's a space for the cable in back, and a tiny door on the left-hand side of the case for attaching the USB cable.

The case is well worth it, because I now have a durable container for putting into my briefcase when traveling, and that container includes the cable. That makes it easy to scan receipts and other paper documents while I'm away from my desk.

I freely admit to being a Case Logic fanboy. It's hard not to be, when every time I have a carrying/storage need, there is always a perfect solution that that has a Case Logic label on it.

This item is no different. I have a Panasonic Lumix camera that resides in another Case Logic case with extra pockets, belt loop, etc. which fits my need for that camera perfectly. However, I wanted a smaller, quicker point and shoot, which I found in the Samsung EC-ST65 Digital Camera with 14 MP and 5x Optical Zoom (Indigo Blue)

This is one of the smallest cameras I've had my hands on as it uses a proprietary slimline rechargeable battery instead of AA or even AAA batteries. It also uses a microSD card instead of a regular SD card. So for my needs, All I wanted was a case that I could store the camera safely in. No need for spare battery or card storage and it's so tiny, you can just slip it in your pocket.

I didn't see where they indicate the material used, but it sure feels like the same neoprene used for my Kindle case. No guarantees there, though. You can check out the camera link, above, and compare the size compared to the case and get a better feel for it when I say the my Samsung just fits like the case was tailor make for it. If it weren't for the fact that the material stretches, it might not quire fit.

As for their claim that you can use it for a smart phone...? Um... yeah. I'd really like to see the smart phone that would actually fit.

Anyway, the construction of this case is solid. The stitching is very tight with no unsightly seams. There are twin "beads" of cushioning around the entire interior perimeter so that when the case is zipped up, it provides protection all the way around the edge of your device. The seams also seal together under the zipper so that if this is truly neoprene, gives a water resistant barrier.

One face of the case is about twice as thick as the other and is much stiffer, adding a nice touch of protection for the screen of your device. The zipper pull is rubber coated for ease of use and the wrist strap is about 9" long with a lobster claw clasp that clips onto the "D" ring on the bottom of the case.

For those of you who have experience with Case Logic products, it's worth emphasizing that this particular case is made from an entirely different material than what we're used to seeing from C.L. I admit I was a little put off by the difference, but I'm really glad I went ahead and got it. I couldn't be happier as, like I said, Case Logic comes through again!

I love this little case. It's VERY lightweight, cute color, and it fits my new Canon ELPH 330HS perfectly. It comes with a carrying strap, but I prefer to use the strap connected to my camera. The camera strap easily fits outside of the case zipper.

I bought the Nx1000 as it was easier to carry around than my bulky DSLR and therefore didn't want to have to lug around a huge camera bag. This is a good compromise as it simply wraps the camera and you can still carry it around your neck and unsnap it fairly quickly to take pictures. It will also hang on so you don't need to worry about forgetting the top portion.

The only negative I have found is that the thumb screw that holds the bottom section to the camera can be a little hard to turn and makes getting to the battery and sdcard a bit of a chore.

This case is specifically designed for the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Elph Camera (esp. the blue one). It protects the camera with a well made leather case enclosure. It does however add bulk to the total camera carrying experience. There is a slot in the top of the case so the camera's carrying strap can go through. Also the Case has a belt loop on the back.

If you carry additional batteries, memory cards, etc. this is NOT the case for you. If however, you are looking for a case specifically designed for this camera; then look no further. It's specifically designed to protect the camera ONLY.

I purchased this when I got my Canon SD770is camera. Within 24 hours, I was researching for a better case for my needs. After my research, I went online and purchased a Case Logic UNZ-2 Small Universal Pocket with Screen Protection (Blue/Silver). Simply, the Canon case is very bulky and I buy the Powershots for their function and their size. I want a case that I can easily put in my pocket and hardly realize that it is there. For my needs, I wouldn't use the Canon case if it were given to me. There is no doubt it will protect your camera, but the extra bulk and lack of any flexibility are a big downside for me. On the other hand, I absolutely love my Case Logic case. Frankly, if the Canon case is that large, you should be able to carry an extra charged battery and an extra memory card. But, you can't. Two thumbs down for this Canon case.

I bought this to go with my wife's new Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Blue). The camera fits perfectly in it and has a magnetic flap that keeps the flap securely in place. While it adds to the bulk of the camera, it's a small price to pay to keep the camera safe. It's definitely a must add-on for the Canon camera.

Bought this case for my Canon SD770IS and it's very good, the camera fits in perfectly and it protects in very well. Of course it makes it all a bit larger so I only use it when I really need to protect my camera, if I carry the camera in my pocket or so I don't use the case. Like the magnetic closure, works very well, easy to open and close.
